My second child was a tongue sucker....nursed fine..but gave me very scabbed
nipples for two solid weeks. :D I did a lot of finger suckling between
feeds to help train her tongue and mainly the football hold. In the hospital
I encourage finger suckling to new parents prior to latching baby on, and
inbetween feeds. Once...we tried finger feeding with an SNS for first real
attempt at feeding (baby was also not very eager to eat since birth) 12 hours
after delivery. The subsequent feedings went well thereafter. Baby was
still vulnerable to learning the action tongue needs to take while developing
an appetite. Also had a G3 P3 that had a little guy who sucked his tongue
so tight it was difficult to place finger in his mouth. After 4 days of
finger feeding with EBM and attempts at nursing at the breast...He started to
latch well. Mom had extremely sore nipples but, was very determined. I was
sure she would quit.
