Hello Again!

In a post last week, I wrote that our local Breastfeeding Coalition put
together a couple packets to be given at prenatal appointments. Due to the
many responses I received, I decided to describe them both to the list. We
can send examples also, just let me know privately.

(We use clear, flat plastic bags, with a bright cover page showing through).

For the first prenatal appointment, we assumed they are in the
precontemplation stage. The Cover Letter says "Breastfeeding? It's too
important not to....Learn about it, Consider it, Try it"
We them referenced Amy Spangler's quote-"While breastfeeding may not seem
the right choice for every parent, it is the best choice for every baby."
Included in the packet are: Breastfeeding BOOKFinder (by the Iowa
Department of Public Health), "101 Reasons to Breastfeed Your Baby"
(http://www.promom.org/101), a LLL pamphlet for the local
groups, "Breastfeeding Basics #1: Thinking About Breastfeeding (pamphlet
put out by North Central Regional Extension resources) and "Breastfeeding
Your Baby: Making the Decision Together" (a pamphlet about fathers
supporting breastfeeding from the USDA).

The second packet is given out around 32 weeks. This focuses on the
Preparation and Action Phases. It focuses on benefits, positive social
pressure, information and children's books. The Cover letter
says "Breastfeeding: What's in it for Mom? Burn extra calories, Delay
menstrual periods, and Add your name here:" It then shows an empty heart
by 11 other hearts that have celebrity names of breastfeeding moms,
including a couple that breastfed twins.
The pamphlets inside are: "Fathers Can Support Breastfeeding" by the USDA,
the next 4 in the series of the Breastfeeding Basics by the North Central
Region Extension:#2 Getting Started, #3 The Early Weeks, #4 Common
Concerns, #5 Returning to work or school; and a list of children's books.

Hope this gives you some insight and generates some buzz on what else we
can all use in packets.

Buffy Constant, BA, Doula, CBE, and Mom
