I love your dress shoe / sneaker / cozy slipper
analogy!  Trust me when I say I will be borrowing /
stealing / quoting your terrific analogy with moms in
the future.

Taking it a step further (no pun intended), there are
shoes other people want us to wear (such as strange
non-physiological advice), and shoes our feet want to
wear...

I suspect too sometimes the "discomfort" is more than
physical.
