Well, I'm a mother who needed to breastfeed in emergency situations (x2), e.g. stuck on a dirt road in a remote area, in the early stages of pregnancy, and about 16 hours before we had help. Feeding every hour, on the hour, boosted my supply to replace two large cups of bovine milk that my child had been having. I never had any doubts that I could boost my milk supply and it never occurred to me that my early pregnancy would be an impediment. Heaven only knows what would have happened without breastmilk and knowing how to increase it. Her hydration was never in question.
Had I followed the health services recommendations and fully bottle-fed many months before, my daughter would have been in a dire situations as we wouldn't have carried enough artificial milk for such a long time without help. Mercifully, I had reversed weaning when she was a few weeks old, thanks to advice from LLL.
This was in a remote area of a Western country, not in a war zone or disaster area, but the emergency was real.
On an earlier occasion, my then husband decided to take a seldom-used shortcut with myself and the baby, in temperatures of 114 fahrenheit. I was unable to dissuade him. We had to stop ever few kilometres to dip nappies (diapers) in water in the running bore drains, so that I could wrap wet cloths around her to keep her cool.
This baby has excelled in sport and academia in adult life.
