Two of my sons had hernia operations, one at 2 years and one
at 8 weeks. This was done under general anesthesia. For the two
year old, I was told not to give him anything, including breast
milk for 2 or 3 hours before the surgery
my 2nd son also had surgery for a hernia at 17 mos. i also followed the
protocol for clear fluids being given no closer than 2-3 hrs before surgery and
nursed him until then and imm after. the hosp staff told us he would not be able
to come home until he stopped vomiting and kept a fluid down after waking
post-surgery. not only did he not vomit once, but i nursed him continuously as
soon as his eyes opened right after surgery until we left the hosp.he never
required any sort of pain medication after coming home either, besides his beloved
'moij'. i am searching for the link to the article i used to convince the
surgeon breastmilk is a clear fluid...i will post it when i find it!
