Hi all,

We have a compounding pharmacist here in St. Louis, also. This is a DPh who
not only dispenses pre-manufactured drugs, but can mix up custom-made batches
of certain pharmaceuticals. I believe it requires a special license. Can't
just hang out a shingle and become a "potion maker".

Anyway, he recently looked into mixing up the nasal spray for one of our LCs
here in town, that had been asked to track some down for one of her NICU
patients. Tom found the company that manufactures the pitocin powder from
which to make the spray. Once reconstituted, it is good for 18 months. The
price, however, is REALLY high, so the more commitment he could get from local
LCs to use the stuff, the cheaper it was per dose. Even then, it came out to
about $50 for a 5 cc bottle.

I suspect the pharmacist that Kathleen heard from is looking to see if there's
a market out there, to justify investing in the materials. I don't think he's
trying to pull a "fast one".

My question is, how necessary/helpful/whatever is the nasal spray? It used to
be prescribed like candy to bf moms, sort of the way Reglan was starting to be
prescribed. Have we really missed having it off the market? Any opinions?

By the way, if you know someone who needs the spray, Tom did make up a batch.
E-mail me privately, & I'll tell you how to contact him, if you want to get
some!
