Daer all:

I need your help for the sake of NY lactation consultants. I had this
brain storm this morning after exhausting myself the day before with very
professional letters and articles on some key lactation topics to seen to
Michel Cohen's office. I started one of them off with - I see we share
stimilar concerns about the impact of Tr-Vi-Sol on breastfeeding.... and
provided some of the info I gleaned from CDC.

So, I wanted to get the NY Times to do a piece for International Lactation
Consultant Association Day and see if I could persuade them to interview
Jane Heinig at UC Davis about the talk she presented at the Academy of
Breastfeeding Medicine that features what we do, and why women need our
help. Then I was thinking of clearcut case examples that refute some of the
assertions in Cohen's book. I have one case with a rare condition who was
helped by many LCs in New York who has agreed that she would be fine with
being interviewed.

I have another case that I'm thinking of whom I helped with positioning -
who, if you saw how she was latching - looked terrible - one of the
Dangerous Dangling Babies as well call them after watching Diane
Weisseninger's presetation. I fixed one little tiny nipple tilt from her
presentation, left the rest alone and her pain was gone. The baby took 4.7
oz and was only 6 days old. It represents the idea that yes, we do work
without gadgets when things are going well - and that simple changes in
position don't need to be awkward for the mother.

I want to feature a piece on a group clinic by another LC that offers low
cost follow up in a smaller more intimate setting than breastfeeding
support groups.

Any of you out there with experience in press releases or thoughts on how
to present this case to the Times - feel free to pipe up.

I had called Michel Cohen's publisher to suggest an idea I had about how to
defuse the situation. I shall never have respect for him as a
professional, but he has professed that he didn't intend to harm our
profession. One good way to demonstrate this would be to use his
connections to present some features on positive experiences with LCs.
Still, I'm not sure if I trust him. Anyway - he called me himself when I
was already on the phone. So, I think I'm going to say that I have some
constructive suggestions and need about a week to think these through
before I'm ready to share these ideas with him. Again - any ideas on my
thoughts are really welcome.

Best regards, Susan Burger
