In Norwegian I talk about 'milking' or 'tapping' the breast. Tapping comes
up when mothers show concern that their seeming inability to 'empty' the
breast will cause problems, and I try to say that 'tapping' the breasts
often is more important than turning them into inside-out empty pockets.
Or we just discuss it in terms of 'milking to relieve pressure'. Or 'turning
on the faucet and keeping it running' in the case of avoiding stasis if
incipient mastitis is suspected.
Drainage sounds like horrible surgical wards with tubes going into bodily
orifices and slurpy noises to make me gag. OK. I KNOW I went to nursing
school and that I am now a practicing midwife. I still don't have to like
slurpy noises from drainage of bodily fluids or anything that reminds me of
them.
