In June 2006, Janice Reynolds reported on a diarrhea epidemic in Botswana.
(See below) At the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto in August,
Jean Humphrey reported, "Flooding in January/February 2006 contributed to an
infant diarrhea epidemic (35,000 cases, 532 deaths).
Not breastfeeding: 50-fold higher risk of diarrhea and 8-fold higher risk of
dying from the diarrhea illness."

At the same conference, a pediatrician from Zimbabwe reported that the death
toll had risen to >1,000 deaths, mostly infants of HIV+ mothers enrolled in
PMCT programs and mostly formula-fed and malnourished. Apparently the press
has not continued to follow this sad story that demonstrates the risk of
formula feeding in an area with a high disease burden.

"an outbreak of diarrhea in Botswana that killed about 200 infants several
months ago in part, officials believe, because HIV-positive mothers were
counseled not to breast-feed . Mothers run a risk of passing HIV to their
children through breast-feeding, but feeding powdered milk formula poses
another risk because it does not contain the protective antibodies found in
breast milk."
