I agree wholeheartedly that just because we can handle the more
complex breastfeeding concerns doesn't mean that those are the only
ones we should handle. We need to also see the "routine"
situations to keep a balanced perspective. Years back, before LLLI
had a PL Dept, I was Area Coordinator for Wisconsin. One of the
duties was to field the breastfeeding questions that had leaders
stumped. I remember how reassuring it was to go to a series meeting
and answer the more "routine" questions. My first job as an OB RN
was at a large, high risk, inner city hospital. I saw a wide
variety of situations, but soon found myself starting to think of
the normal uncomplicated deliveries and recovery as the exception
and the critical, complex pregnancies as the norm. Fortunately I
was able to get a job at my present hospital which has a much more
representative assortment of normal and complex.
The point is, if ILCLCs only see the "train wrecks" we could easily
lose sight of what is normal and start thinking of all breastfeeding
as "high risk" and complicated!

doesn't duplicate what someone else has said but I haven't read yet)
