When I went from being a labor and delivery nurse to being the LC I chose to wear business casual with a lab coat to differentiate myself from staff so I would not be mistakenly asked to do staff work by physicians. I felt it also set me apart as a new professional as this was the first LC at our hospital. The only problem was I was then mistaken as a doctor by some of my patients! After several years, the requests to do OB staff work totally stopped and I went to wearing my own purchased scrubs of a different color than the staff and that has worked well. Our OB unit wears ID badges that are different color than anywhere in the hospital. I have one too. This is how we tell our patients to know who is OB staff and who is not.
