Barbara asks: "what is the cause of the swelling and pain? A plugged duct?
If so why is it recurring every 2-3 days? Is there anything I can do other
than what the doctors recommend --- stopping the milk production? If I
don't stop the milk production, what practices can I do to prevent the
plugging of the duct and/or engorgement."

I had a situation similar to this when I was nursing my twins, although I
didn't consult any doctors about it. What I *suspect* was happening is that
it was a series of recurring plugged ducts; in my case the areas of concern
were pretty far up & back from the nipple, so I figured they just weren't
getting drained as well as they might, & the problem built up over a couple
of days till I was "forced" to pay enough attention to get the whole breast
really weel-drained. Didn't know in those days what I do now, but I worked
with warm compresses, gentle massage over affected areas, all those kinds of
very basic things. Situation improved when I began wearing breast shells in
my bra between fdgs; it seemed to help by squishing out some of the excess.
Has she tried positioning the baby so that the chin is in the affected
quadrant of the breast, to facilitate good drainage?

I don't think that stopping BFing and "medication" to "stop milk production"
will be the answer! She will experience wicked, painful, probably
inflmmatory engorgement, and her baby won't be bfing, and ultimately will
have a big LOSS, no GAIN. (Just my hunch!)
