Having had a run on "baby won't take a bottle and I'm going back to
work" questions this last week, here is an additional suggestion.
When they've tried all the more usual suggestions, I suggest holding
baby in a way as unlike the nursing position as possible. While it
is easier and more "cuddly" for the caregiver to hold baby in one
arm against their body, we know that that makes many babies
immediately turn and look for the breast. I have found it works
sometimes to sit baby on the lap facing the caregiver or the
opposite, sitting with baby's back against the caregivers tummy. It
often works when nothing else does. Once baby has accepted that
food can come in other containers than mom's breast, it is usually
possible to then hold baby in the usual more cuddly position.
If only babies never had to learn this.

Winnie
