Dear Friends:

I have started meeting with mothers in my City's Welfare to Work program; my
goal is to promote breastfeeding to them. As this is a population that I've
not worked with before, my first meeting was spent listening to them tell me
about their lives.

The first question, and the one shared by most was "How can I get to be a
mom when I am only with my baby 2 hours a day?" As Judy has already posted,
the women are oftenj away for at least 12 hours (public transportation takes
a long time plus the time they are in job training). The message in my City
is that "bedsharing kills"....so their babies are away from them all night
also. About 40% of them admitted to sleeping with their babies, so I used
that as an opportunity to discuss the elements of safe bed-sharing (no
tobacco, drugs or alcohol, firm sleep surface, baby wearing what they are
wearing, only the parents, nobody so exhausted as to be unresponsive, no
pillows, pets or other children in bed.)

After listening to this group of passionate hard-working women, seeking to
make their lives better for their children, I can't see exclusive
breastfeeding being a possibility once the women are enrolled in the
program.........unless the program permits the mothers to bring their
little babies with them during the training. (Fat chance that will happen,
but I am going to try!) The jobs that most of these women will get will not
permit toilet breaks much less breaks to pump.

This situation is so sad.
