Does anyone have thoughts or know of studies on the rate of miscarriage
with ecological breastfeeding / LAM and non-ecological child spacing?
It seems to me, anecdotally, that the rate of early -- often very early
-- miscarriage is quite high among long-term breastfeeders. I have
always wondered if this is related to the short luteal phase in the
early months of return of ovulation. In other words, the natural
hormonal balance of the body avoids pregnancies that are not healthy for
a longer period of time, thus lowering the rate of continuing,
complicated pregnancies.
I guess the question would be: Are there more miscarriages and fewer
complications at term in mothers who ecologically breastfeed?
Of course, it could just appear that way because mothers who breastfeed
seem to be more "in tune" with their bodies. They might believe they are
pregnant and believe they are miscarrying more often; I imagine they
would be right about this, more often. Among the 25% of women thought to
miscarry very early (I think that's the statistic, although I don't know
how you study "thought to") I get the feeling that most of them are
breastfeeding mothers (who have my phone number). So another interesting
research question would be, do breastfeeding mothers more accurately
predict pregnancy than other mothers?
Jo-Anne Elder-Gomes, PhD in an area that doesn't normally require
statistics.
