No real answer! It depends on the baby (they do not come labeled "i can
develop nipple preference" :-) They need such a little bit in first day or
two. I'd probably get mom to hand express into a teaspoon and get it into
the baby by hook or by crook, on spoon, in a bottle nipple, dip your finger
in and let baby lick off, with an eyedropper. When I was working in hosp
back in dark ages 86-91, I used to tell moms that colostrum was liquid gold,
get what ever she could get into a nipple and feed it to baby. Lots of
times I saw ONE feed of 10-15 cc turn baby around so that next feeding s/he
went to breast like the colostrum taste woke up the part of the brain that
had to suck. i have no explanation other than taste and smell contributing
. I think problems begin to arrive when we use formula (different taste and
smell) and use large volumes (colostrum is small volume day 1 & 2)-keeps
bottle nipple in mouth longer so baby becomes accustomed to it. They are
incredibly imprintable little creatures! That's my take on it. Also I look
askance at anyone who says cup (or finger or eyedropper or SNS is the only
way to go.) You just have to figure out what works for this baby and
mother in this situation. Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
