Denny writes <<However, more to the point, she certainly doesn't need to put
herself in an adversarial position with her babies doctors. I
doubt anyone could count on a patient getting the best possible care
while threatening their hcp with legal action. By the way, the family
does have a lawyer because *get this* even though she is the biological
mother of these babies, because they were delivered by a surrogate, she has
to legally ADOPT her own kids!>>
A couple thoughts. I believe opposite of above is true. If there is threat
of lawsuit the care will be TOP NOTCH above reproach. Also perhaps the
surrogate (current legal mom) could be the one intervening for the babies to
receive donor milk. They could all ask for an ethics council meeting.
I suggested to Denny when this case was first presented that:
1. mom ask to see the hosp pt advocate
2. hosp attorney
3. dir. of nursing and/or ceo
4. ask for pt's bill of rights - this will address being informed, having
all care options offered, right to choose, refuse etc.
Good luck.
