Once mom is well enough to pump and bottle feed, she should be able to nurse. She is just as likely to transmit bacteria from expressed breastmilk as she is from nursing, since she is going to get her germs all over the bottle, flanges, and into the milk from touching the inside of the bottle, bottle cap, etc.

I assume the baby is being treated with antibiotics preventively, likely in most cases for close contacts of people who have bacterial meningitis.

Subject: bacterial meningitis in mother



Does anyone have any experience with a mother breastfeeding in the hospital with bacterial meningitis when they are on droplet precautions? We are okayed for pumping and bottle-feeding her milk that she is sending home. But she would like to breastfeed her baby too. Any concerns if she wears a mask and/or gloves?
