Hi, Carrie. I went through the very same issues. My husband and I thought
it important for me to distinguish myself in my appearance. I wore street
clothes and a lab coat when I first started working for my department.
Some nurses complained to my boss that I dressed too, casual--and at times
I did. If I wore scrubs, then people would comment that I "looked like one
of them" (which let me know that they didn't like me wearing street
clothes). I finally decided that scrubs were easier and less expensive
than dry cleaning. I bought new scrubs, and within the week my VP told me
that I needed to stop wearing scrubs and to distinguish myself. Great! I
started wearing street clothes again, and 3 months later I got a new boss
in the Maternal Child Health Dept. Everyone in the dept. wears scrubs--
including my boss--at some time or another. I just decided I would
continue. It's much easier for me. I did find that patients got off the
phone quicker when I came in the room with a lab jacket, but they really
don't care what I wear as long as I help them breastfeed.
