Hi Erika,
It sounds like this mom may have had or now has an abscess. I have seen this
type of situation and the breast tissue can be damaged and produce very
little. I would encourage this mother if at all possible to resume full bf
on the unaffected breast, aiming to preserve a full supply unilaterally. If
you or someone else has not assessed the positioning and latching and
observe a full feeding, if not several, then I would have that done as soon
as possible. Something had to damage her nipples severely in early
lactation. I would look for tongue-tie too.  If possible, can she see a
breast specialist or surgeon who would be familiar with diagnosis and
treatment of breast abscess?
