Nancy writes: "Expressing milk from the breast is not
like sucking liquid from a straw. With a straw, the stronger you suck,
the more you get. But when you express your milk, it's all about the
let-down." >>>>>

Very nice analogy. Since 7 out of 10 of the women who I work with or teach in
class have already bought a pump, I find myself explaining the differences
frequently, especially when baby is in the NICU and she has a "personal double
pump" or hand pump.
I feel that I'm pretty well versed in the differences between pumps but am
always looking for more information and simple ways to explain them.

Another good point is the part that compression of the breast and areola play
in milk expression. Some women respond well to the "flexible flange" such as
the Ameda/Egnell Flexishield, Avent, Medela or Whisper Wear.
Pumping may never approximate the amount of milk that baby actually gets but
in the US, quantity equals quality and women will always be fixated on the
amount!
