Good question, however when most new babies are BF new moms model
positioning after experienced moms, probably leading to less problems.
They see BF as a normal, natural part of parenthood. Also what is the
epidural rate in Norway and Sweden? Do babies get put to breast
immediately, no separation, no delay? I've said before on Lactnet that at
one hospital with a high epidural rate, the babes went right to breast,
were not separated for that "golden hour or two". I didn't see a lot of
"epidural-type" problems later on. I think the timing had something to do
with it. Another hospital, epidurals, long delay to 1st BF - mega
problems. What do others see?

I think long delays to 1st Bf are a given in the US. An informal study
that I did at that time (1991) av time to breast was approx 4 1/2 hours
(vag) and 10 + hours (c-sec.) Matthews, Canada (1993) found an average of
9.6 hrs. (she didn't separate vag from c-sec.) It is a very simple chart
review. You can do it at your hospital. I just kept tab on every BF mom,
checked baby's chart for 1st time to breast. Did that for 2 mo. Then did
the math. I didn't tell anyone I was checking because I didn't want them
to be aware and change their common practice. This hospital had a policy
that baby could nurse in recovery room. Another author Trevathan (1984)
found a mean time of 27 minutes! in a TX birthing center. about 2/3 of
these moms were BFing at 6 weeks. Early initiation is very important for
many reasons. Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
