Something to ponder.......

How we learn to consider new things from our patients.....,  had a second
time mom come in for some spare pump parts yesterday. She is nursing this
baby well so far. She remarked that her first child ended up primarily
bottle fed pumped milk because she would get recurrent mastits each time
that she attempted to breast feed. She said that the baby would spit up when
breastfed, but not bottle fed pumped milk. I certainly sounded like OAL
issues that were never worked through however she in her own mind thought
that perhaps she got mastitis because of the bacteria from the baby spitting
up causing a change in the baby's oral bacteria.

What do you all think.........? In my own mind I would not think this is
likely, but then at what point does the bacterial content of the GI tract
change - I would assume more so in the bowel due to the fermentation
processes, but anyone care to comment.....

P.S  For those of you that remember, my intention to complete a study on
nipple shield use..it is in progress, but in an effort to have a really
clean study, I've needed to bypass many patients due to
high risk issues. If any one would be willing to talk to me privately about
the study, I could use an experienced researchers' view into ways to make
this study more doable. At this time the only way I can see fit to proceed
would be by doing more of an anectdotal review and include more moms outside
the norm. If I don't change my current variables, I will not have enough for
statistical significance. TIA for any assisstance.
