There was an article in LLLI's New Beginnings Magazine from Aug, 2002 called
"Too Much of a Good Thing" in which this mom's older baby was fussy and
refusing the breast until he stooled. Totally breastfed, good weight gain,
but had lots of difficulty making bowel movements and not very often either.
She finally realized baby was getting too much foremilk and she went 6-8
hours on one breast before letting him change to the other side. This cured
the problem and he started having normal bowel movements and stopped
refusing to nurse. I would suggest this if other symptoms of overabundant
milk supply or foremilk/hindmilk imbalance are present. Also foods that baby
can't tolerate that mom is eating can cause BM problems. Most common is
dairy products.
