Many sit and spin wheels, trying to write letters regarding this tragedy,
and other awful things that happen. I am right there.

A lot of problems include separating feelings about what is going on, and
how to communicate frustrations.

At the moment, my frustration/anger is at a society that bought into the
formula industry, the formula industry itself, as well as a local obstetric
practice (the only practice in town. They do not promote breastfeeding - the
head ob's wife was "unsuccessful" breastfeeding, so they do not mention
breastfeeding, in the belief that other women would feel guilty if they were
also unsuccessful. But, they give out formula samples and "information" from
the formula industry).

I write a monthly column for a local paper, limited to 600 words, about
parenting, childbirth and breastfeeding. At the moment, all I can come up
with is a vemonous diatribe of how the multi-billion dollar formula industry
has contributed to the death of more and more innocent lives, the anger at
the only local practice promoting formula due to ignorance and guilt.

My county in Ohio has the highest rate of obesity (6 out of 10 adults are
considered obese), we have a huge cancer rate (300x the national average)
and more than 70% of local schoolchildren receive federally funded meals due
to low income.

Something as simple as breastfeeding could prevent obesity, decrease the
cancer rate, and provide additional means for low-income families to feed
the rest of their families. And, we refuse to support it.

Reading other letters, so well said and positive, has been very helpful for
me. If you are writing letters, please share them with the list, or post to
me at [log in to unmask] . I am frustrated at my frustration, my anger, and
my inability to write anything but angry words.

Sincerely,
Heather "Sam" Doak
