So, do I have this right--we are supposed to be more concerned about
vegans breastfeeding than we are about omnivores artificially-feeding?

If you read the entire piece, you know that Nina Planck exploited the
tragic death of a 6 week-old baby to further her own agenda. Nina
Planck is in no way an expert on vegan diets, and many of us know she
is far from expert on any aspect of human nutrition. In excerpting her
comments in this post, the context is lost--a context which should
disgust any person who deplores exploitative "journalism". The death of
the baby is not about veganism--it may be about stupidity or complete
ignorance or mental illness, but not about being vegan. I wonder if the
Times would run an article entitled "Meat eaters kill baby" if an
omnivorous family neglected their child? This is just one more
reflection of how cultural bias is played out in the press. When stupid
headlines read something like: "Breastfed Baby Starves", everyone on
this list is up in arms, but when these parents' incompetence affords
people like Planck the opportunity to exploit tragedy for their own
agendas, the bias against veganism causes not a ripple.

The truth is that the average American (omnivore) woman is extremely
overfed and seriously malnourished. Any diet that relies on processed
foods comprised of trans fats, grains, artificial sweeteners and
additives is going to be deficient. American women have among the
lowest levels of DHA in their milk of any women on Earth. Last I knew,
very few American women were vegan, so I don't think we are dragging
the numbers down very much. Nina Planck's solution to the SAD is a diet
of cream, eggs, red meat, lard, butter and raw milk--along with greens,
of course. I am one of those people who does not think that we should
cover up the fact that the composition of human milk is very much
influenced by maternal diet, but I think we should all be concerned
about the dangerous chemicals in our food supply, GMO ingredients, our
polluted environment and the nutritional deficiencies in pregnant and
lactating women. This is far from being a vegan issue.
