Evonne, I completely understand what you are saying. The hospital I have
worked in with a mostly "yuppie" population has more than 50% inductions, 90%
epiurdal rate, the vacuums that accompany this anesthesia, and at least 25%
cesearean rate. These babies are not dealing with normal newborn
sleepiness. Every time I worked there, there were 1 to 3 babies who simply
couldn't wake up enough to suckle properly. I found myself having to
supplement with the sns or fingerfeeding frequently to prevent the more than
10% weight loss that often comes with a baby who hasnt' eaten for two days.
Some of the babies came around with skin contact and patience, but others
cannot wake up and they need more intervention. It is true that most of the
nurses don't understand the sleepy period where babies are recovering from
birth, and the cluster feeding pattern, but they are learning. I think it's
sad that the most educated population plunges right in to the high
intervention philosophy of birth. There are some who go through the
process intending to limit or avoid medications and they make it, but they
are the exception.
Good luck in your efforts! Shirley Morris, RN, IBCLC, LMT, REIKI MASTER
