Hi Pamella and Lactnetters,
Just getting my head above water again, such a busy schedule. Yes In
Australia the standards are the same, displaying of the policy and each
individual midwife has a policy which all midwives are using as the
'bible to breastfeeding and baby friendly'. Also any mother that wishes
to use formula has to bring it in with them and prepare it themselves,
if this is their wish, then, they shown how to make the formula up
including how to clean and sterilize bottles and teats.
In Hospitals here in NSW we have been directed to decontaminate bottles
and teats in our Central Sterilization Supply Department (CSSD), and
returned to the wards. This policy has been stipulated as there are some
pathogens that are resistant to the Milton, remembering this is for
multilple useage in Special Care Nurseries, Postnatal Units, and
Paedicatric Units. This has increased the work load for the Staff in
CSSD, which as the Infection Control Officer, I have the biggest input
to all areas at the hospital, utilizing all my knowledge in all areas.
Hope this is useful to you all.
Regards,
Hannah M Herod
