Hello, everyone. This is my first time posting here. My name is Maya Bolman, I
became IBCLC in 2001. I came to US in 1990 from Minsk,Belarus. Hand
expression always been a topic of interest for me. We didn't have any pumps
when I had my oldest daughter(she is 20). I remember,we were asked to
express milk after every breastfeeding on postpartum floor into a cup, then
nurses would collect this milk from all mothers(everyone was breastfeeding no
questions asked). There were also women who were very good at expression
and breast massage, they did it as private practice. My great aunt was one of
them. She was a retired neonatal nurse, she saw mothers with
engorgement,plugged ducts,mastitis. So,later I learned some of her tecniques.
She would sit facing mother, covered herself with towels, because after few
minutes milk would be spraying everywhere. Usually, women stated thay felt
relieve,no pain, and had very soft breasts. I teach all my patients hand
eaxpression. It is both massage and expression, you can do it on soft breast
and engorged one as well. It doesn't look like one on the video. I loved Linda
Smith's comparing this with playing an instrument, you need to feel with your
fingertips the right plase to press( I was a musician back in Belarus). I would
love to see how others do it,agree,it can be more then one right way.
With all my respect to everyone, Maya Bolman RN,BA,BSN,IBCLC
