Don't know about material, but we definitely prefer the 3.5 because
it seems the smaller the size, the less it will interfere with
baby's natural nursing.  It also seems softer that the bigger
ones-don't know if it's the material or just the mechanics of a
smaller tube. Also, the ones we get are shorter that the 5 or 8, so
depending on the technique you use, that might be a little
challenging.  The only time it doesn't work is if mom's colostrum is
especially "thick".  If I'm only using it once or twice to coax a
baby to take the breast, I will add a few drops of sterile water,
but of course you wouldn't want to do that on a regular basis.
