Regarding the pacifier issue . . . when babies are wanting to "suck all the
time", after I am assured that baby is getting enough to eat, I will suggest
to mom and dad to use their (index) finger, nail down to the baby's tongue,
and let the baby suck it all the way back to the back of his mouth so the
finger pad is at the soft palate. I'm not one who is against pacifier use,
except in the first few days of life. (I figure if the baby needs suck time,
he should be using mom as the pacifier to bring her milk in faster.) But
breastfeeding babies usually don't like pacifiers because they are so
short. This works well, and dads usually really like to do it. And their
fingers are not too big. The bigger the better.
