Have seen quite a few questions/references to nauseaus/vomiting
during breastfeeding. As a L&D person, I deal mostly with
breastfeeding in the first 2 hrs. post delivery. Most of the
multips (women who are having their 2nd child or more) seem
to experience nausea during the feed. The nausea seems to
correlate with the MER, (extreme afterpains, rhythmic sucking)
and I have seem many women need to take the baby off the
breast at this point as they find the afterpains and nausea
unbearable. Extreme surge of oxytocin? Other hormonal state?
I know this mecdotal, but I see gain, and again, and
again, to the point where I have a mum who may be having her
3rd or 4th, and tells me that she had severe afterpains with
her previous, I tell them they may experience the nausea so
they are ready for it, sometimes it's so severe, it catches
them off guard, which is when they delatch the baby and hand
off. I have never had anyone actuly vomit from this.

Re IV's in Labour: the true art is to know when one needs to
use high risk intervention and when one doesn't.
Thanks for listening.
