For Justin,

You asked a couple of great questions, and there's lots of information
available to answer them.

I encourage you, and others who are talking about the question of
breastfeeding in public, to remember that breastfeeding is more than just a
way to provide food and drink to an infant or young child. It is a method of
caring for a child, protecting a child, and comforting a child. This
viewpoint is really useful if people start making analogies. A baby has the
right to eat in public? Sure! And the baby has a right to be cared for,
comforted, and protected in public too.

So anywhere a parent or other caregiver could bottle feed OR give a pacifier
OR hug and soothe an upset child, a breastfeeding mother should be able to
give her breast to her nursing child.

I said more about this in an editorial I wrote about a year ago. This isn't
research--there's nothing scientific here---just personal reflections.

Good luck to you and your fellow students,
Chris
