I just attended an outstanding one-day conference, hosted by my ILCA chapter
PRO-LC in Pennsylvania, with Cathy Watson Genna. Jammed packed with
picture, videos, and knoweldge-abounding. She has an incredible video clip,
running maybe 5 mins, showing a baby being paced-bottle-fed.

O. M. G.

This baby starts out like a limp, passive, depressed, soggy rag doll.
Haven't we *all* seen that baby, as we do our IBCLC work? I think it was
Dad, being shown how to give the Baby more control over the feeding process
with paced botlle-feeding ... to mimic (doh) what happens in BF. There
were several times when, as B paused, Dad would twist the bottle and pull it
out to rest *on* the baby's lower lip. (As in, "Yes, it is still here, when
you want it.") As B showed appropriate cues (opening mouth, sticking out
tongue), the bottle was allowed to be drawn back in. Not jammed in -- drawn
in by B.

By the end of the feed this B had those "bright eyes" we see in a B *eager*
to feed. B was looking up and engaging Dad. Mouth and jaw were an active
part of the feeding process. Tongue was cupping the nipple.

I don't think the clip is available without the presenter ... but I'd
encourage everyone who gets a chance to attend a conference with Lactnet's
own Cathy Watson Genna when she is speaking in your area. And bring the
speech pathologists with you!
