I have just been speaking with a mum of a 3 and a half month old with a
breast refusal problem that has me stumped, so I thought I would post it
here for all you brilliant minds.

This baby fed beautifully until one month ago, when he started refusing to
feed except when he is semi-asleep. Mum cannot identify anything that
changed at the time with her or baby, eg he didn't get a fright from
anything, she's not on the Pill or anything else, no changes that she can
identify, baby healthy according to her GP (family doc), etc. Baby is
otherwise contented, not colicky or refluxy. She is finding it very
stressful to keep fitting in his feeds when he is asleep. He was sleeping
well at night, but she now has to try to keep feeding him at night to make
sure he gets enough milk. His weight gain, wet nappies, etc are all down
compared to the time before this all started, but are not yet critical,
because of her efforts to keep feeding him. She doesn't know how long she
can keep this up, and although very committed to breastfeeding is starting
to consider bottle feeding. She was not receptive to the option of
expressing and using a bottle. She has not yet tried giving him a feed by
bottle - I suggested she try this while holding him as close to a
breastfeeding position as possible, just to see if he fusses like he does
at the breast. He loves his dummy when he is sleepy, although not so much
at other times. He will happily nuzzle near the breast while sucking his
dummy, but will protest loudly if mum tries to attach him to the breast for
a feed. It's like he has a psychological aversion to breastfeeding. Has
anyone heard of anything like this? Has anyone got any suggestions for this
mum?

TIA
