It seems as if the simplest thing (for the mom who has to take the 9-5 class
1 wk pp) to do is have a sitter, dad or otherwise, at the place her class
meets. They will get out for breaks and lunch (they may be short but even
three short nursings would minimize her need to pump). I would be very
frank with mom about nipple confusion in the first week. However, we know
that some babies are susceptible to this problem and some seem to have no
problem. One week olds sleep so very much that I wonder if she couldn't
have the baby at her desk in a carrier or sling for a great deal of the
time, nurse as needed, and use the sitter for times the baby cries or is
fussy? This all sounds reasonable to me (having seen newborns happy and
nursing quietly at almost any event you can imagine) but to a new mom it may
seem radical--her perception may be that her baby will be screaming
constantly and therefore could not/should not be taken to class (and she of
course could be right). It seems that the possible difficulties involved
tip the scales toward having on-site care, if mom is open to the idea.
