I really feel for the mom with the persistent nipple crack, on the only
breast she is nursing on! This sounds like the cracks that I had for a
couple months, while nursing my fifth baby. They would start to close up
between feedings but, every time he latched on, would tear open. They
didn't hurt much, throughout most of the feeding, but sure hurt at the
start! I tried everything I could think of, including nursing on only one
side for 48 hours and doing only a little hand-expression on the other. By
the time that was up, it looked pretty well healed, but the second he
latched on again, it tore wide open again. I knew that this wasn't because
of poor positioning. By the time they started, I had already been nursing
Joseph for almost three months, and had spent a total of six years nursing
my other children. Finally, one day, I started to wonder if it could be a
deficiency of some kind. I started taking vit A and E supplements, and they
were closed up within a couple of days. Throughout the three more years
that I nursed, both Joseph and our sixth baby, Joanna, the cracks stayed
closed, as long as I kept taking the Vit. A and E, but the same spots would
start to open up again, if I went very many days in a row without taking
them. I have no idea how common this is, but it is an easy thing to try,
especially where other attempts have failed.

Best Wishes,
Darillyn
