Dear Friends:
    Just as with any baby, one goes for the best and can never be certain
what the outcome will be.
    However, I worked with a baby at the far end of this continuum. 3rd baby;
mom an experienced breastfeeder (long-term with 2 older children). This baby
was so impaired she could not eat; she never showed feeding cues, and never
fed well either, despite a patient and loving mamma with a more than adequate
supply. The baby also had a heart defect requiring surgery. Those two factors
together resulted in an inability to gain weight. I will never forget the
anguish of this situation.
    warmly,

Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CCE
Adjunct Faculty, Union Institute and University, Lactation Program
