I have no clinical research , but I have used natural HRT and breastfed for
the past 3 years. At age 40 and 5 months postpartum, I was diagnosed with
severe osteoporosis. The cause seemed to be hormone deficiencies and the cause of
that unknown. I initially took Allesse, a very low dose combination birth
control pill, which greatly reduced my milk supply and had other undesirable side
effects, including vaginal bleeding in my nursing daughter. I did not want to
take synthetic hormones so I saw my naturopath and began natural hormones
compounded from soy (for estrogen) and wild yam (for progesterone). It took some
months to regulate the levels, but I have had steady improvement in bone density
and osteoporosis symptoms. Also, the milk supply rebounded when I
discontinued Allesse. I continue to breastfeed my almost 4 year old daughter and have had
no side effects so far. My thinking on the issue is reflected in Hale 2002
regarding use of estrogen-estradiol "If oral contraceptives are used during
lactation, the transfer of estradiol to human milk will be low and will not exceed
the transfer during physiologic conditions when the mother has resumed
ovulation." Thus, taking these natural hormones brings my levels back to a normal
state and should not harm the baby.
