Mom of 4 month old totally breastfed baby started noticing what she
described as bumps/blisters on the circumference of his lips. He also
developed a "bumpy" diaper rash. Shortly thereafter she found lesions that
looked the same on one nipple then a few days later on the areola. This
was accompanied by constant pain that increased when nursing. The other
breast has remained free of pain or lesions. After lots of questions and
review it sounded most like herpes simplex but then when I saw them a few
days later I'm not sure: the bumps/blistters on the baby are more on the
skin adjacent to the lips and up on to the cheeks which are red and rough,
are dry and have not ever weeped or crusted like I am familiar with herpes
doing. He does not act like he is bothered by this at all. The mother's
nipple has the same dry looking spot with some underlying redness. Mom
reports that this is what they look like, do not have an eruption state, do
not spread but seem limited to old ones healing and new ones appearing. I
have suggested she see a dermatologist but mom is very non-medical. She
has tried several remedies: lanolin, homeopathic remedies, etc with nothing
making a difference. Thoughts? Suggestions?
