I am a hospital based LC.In a couple of weeks, a mom will deliver who has no
use of her rt. arm and leg from aneurysms which caused two strokes. One more
aneurysm is still intact so she will have a csection. Just recently her
rehab has started doing baby care tasks with her. The Case Manager for our
unit and I met with her today so we could coordinate our efforts and we will
know what her needs are before the fact. She is working with a sling and has
a nursing pillow and is doing some work in front of a mirror. I made some
suggestions and showed her ways to accomplish position and latch on but feel
that there is so much more out there for her. This is a first for me with a
situation like this so I am calling on all of you for your suggestions,
ideas and input. I don't think I have to tell you how special this baby is
to this couple and breastfeeding just tops it off. She will have some help
at home initially but hopes to become as independent as possible. Right
now, she wears a brace on her lower rt. leg and uses a cane occasionally to
stabilize herself. She can use her rt arm to stabilize something for a
short period of time but she physically has to lift that arm and hand onto
the object with her left hand. The fingers of the rt hand are clenched, she
can spread them open with the lt hand but they clench right up again. I look
forward to your responses. We will be having a case conference about her
next week so the staff is prepared. I have also read JHL,s issue on one
handed nursing etc.
