I would like to ask a question, that may be difficult or very personal to
answer.

I have often heard that women may choose to, or be unable to, breastfeed, if
they have been sexually abused.

My question is, why are they emotionally or psychologically able to "have
sex" (and thus get pregnant), but then not able to breastfeed?

I would think that the act of "having sex" would be much more reminiscent of
the sexual abuse, (and thus more traumatic and emotional charged) than the
act of nursing a baby.

I am not wanting to sound disrespectful or uncompassionate. This is an
honest question that I have been too afraid to ask.

The only thing I could think of, is perhaps sexual abuse often includes
breast fondling, and the abused woman would instruct her current partner to
avoid breast play, and thus she is able to permit sexual contact?

I'm sorry if this is too personal or graphic, but I think I may not be the
only person with this question.

Janice Reynolds,
hoping to understand better, and be more compassionate because of it.

Subject: Why not to put baby to breast - pumping only

There are many reasons moms will exclusively pump. One good reason - sexual
abuse.
