At our hospital it is pretty well known that there are Lactation Consultants.
They call the Family Birthplace to get a pump. If we are not there our
Clinical Managers take it to the patients. We usually have a message the next day
to go check on these moms. Do some of them get mishandled? I am sure. We
have found out days into an admission about a Mom who has an abscess for
example. So not everyone knows what they should be doing. But we get frequent
calls from adult and pediatric ER and ICU, Med/Surg floors. So far I have not
been told to clock into their cost centers when I go. It is a courtesy the
Family Birthplace provides at this time. But that could change with budget cuts.
