Hi Jennifer,
Your daughter may have some degree of obsessive-compulsive
disorder. I don't say this lightly. Last fall my then 13 yo daughter
told me she had been reading on the internet and she thought she had
obsessive-compulsive disorder, OCD. We discussed it some, I took her to
a therapist who said, yes, indeed, she has OCD. My dau. was in therapy
for several months and learned to control her thinking and compulsions.
'I have a choice here, mom.'
I had 2 sessions with the therapist myself to evaluate the whole
family. Plan of care: I needed to get away alone with my husband to
bond more with him and discuss family issues regularly - which we did
and are doing. My husband needs to be more 'in charge' with our 15 yo
son when I'm not home, my dau. was taking on some of the parenting role
when I'm not home. Love and accept her unconditionally. My dau. CAN make
choices about her drawers and how many times she flips a light switch,
her day can still be ok if her shower wasn't 'just so'.
Another thing I learned was that I have mild OCD, I've been
counting things in patterns of 8s since I was a young child; yet
functioning just fine in the world. The therapist said my daughter's
condition is likely hereditary, and also from stress.
To make this about breastfeeding, my daughter loved to nurse and
nursed until age 2.
