<< I have a handout on my web site dealing with "rapid reduction of milk

 babies did not live.

Linda,
Thanks for posting this web site. I was working with a mom last week (baby
born 8/11 6 a.m., died 19 hours later) and I wish I had known about it
sooner. It is now in my files. I did recommend the things I knew from my last
class, and also lots of sage. She did have some leaking, but no engorgement
for which she was grateful. Because I was the only person besides the midwife
(and of course the parents) that saw and held this baby while he was alive,
her connection to me and the need to talk about him has been very strong.

I have a question for the group. I am working with a mom diagnosed w/ bipolar
disorder. She was advised by psych. to discontinue breastfeeding so she could
go back on Lithium and Valium. After 5 days with baby off breast mom quit
meds because baby began projectile vomitting (within 24 hours of formula and
continued this for 4 days), and I helped her when she was trying to get
breastfeeding going again. I gave her information from Hale (98-99 ed.) on
Ativan and Versed to take to her doctor. She has tried both and had a
reaction (to both) that she describes as her "throat closing up" and she is
asking me if there is another alternative to Valium. Mom desperately wants to
continue breastfeeding. Hale says long-term use of Valium may prove
troublesome. Any feedback that I can give her? (BTW, baby is now five months
old.)
Thanks in advance
Laurie Moody, B.S. Ed., CLC
