I think I have posted about this before, but I also have concerns about
whether some of these cases recorded as "overlaying" are actually cases of
infanticide.

Here in Ontario, the provincial coroner-in-chief decided to review all the
autopsies of babies certified as dying of SIDS over a period of two years.
In a significant percentage of cases, the cause of death was changed to
suffocation and in several cases people were charged with the child's death.

And I know personally of two cases where a previous history of child abuse
made everyone very suspicious when a baby was brought to the hospital, dead,
and the parent reported accidentally rolling over on the baby while
sleeping. How do you determine, medically, the difference between a baby who
was rolled over on accidentally and a baby who was deliberately smothered?
There was not enough evidence to prosecute, and these deaths join the
"overlaying" statistics. But almost everyone I know who was involved with
these cases, and knew the background, felt very suspicious.
