Jeanette,
Your post was beautiful and brought tears to my eyes. It sent me right back to a delivery room experience I had as an OB nurse. During the labor the baby developed severe fetal distress. We had to do an emergency C Section under extremely stressful circumstances for both the staff and the parents. When the baby was delivered he was whisked over to the warmer to be dried and evaluated, suctioned etc. The pediatricians were working on him and the parents were watching from across the room. He was pink and vigorous and had all his fingers and toes. I called across the room to the terrified parents "He's perfect" at which point they burst into tears. The pediatric resident turned to me and said I should never use that word, because what if they found something wrong with the baby. I understood her point, on the other hand it seemed to me that for the moment at hand he was as perfect as any baby could be. Of course I was not stating that he would never have a problem, maybe he would have a seizure in 5 minutes, or reflux in 5 weeks, or failure to thrive at 5 months, obesity at 5 years or ADD at 15. All I was saying was at this moment in time your baby has everything we expect a baby to have. Every parent deserves to hear that, although it is not possible to say it to all of them. And who knows, maybe he will grow up to be the planet's first perfect human being.
