I'm responding to Winne's post re: people wanting help if it comes packaged
in a box they see fit to use. I've had that experience many times, just as
I've had challenges with people who are so filled with angst, no wonder it'
hard for them to breastfeed!

Today, I was visiting a 3rd time mom of a NICU baby, that I had seen the
previous two days. She had nothing good to say about her two previous
breastfeeding experiences, that it just doesn't work for her. Each day I
visited her she seemed angry and so sure that breastfeeding would fail. I
was NOT enjoying her company and began to think "why am I here". SIGH!

The baby was admitted with a blood glucose of 3 and needed an umblical
venous line just to stabilze him. Mom was a poorly controlled insulin
dependant gestation diabetic. Yesterday, she told me she would not continue
to pump if things did not turn around quickly. Discouraged for her and her
baby, today I approached her again with minimal expectations. After spending
some time with her once again, she confessed to the fact that her brother
had drowned overseas during her pregnancy, that the baby was named after him
and she showed me a picture of her beloved "baby brother". This mother's
anger was grief and after a hug and some tears, she began to pump nice
amounts of colostrum for her baby. And so for today, this mom will give her
baby what she can provide for him.

This Thanskgiving Day, I thank everyone on this list and list mothers who
inspire me to continue working in this profession, knowing that sometimes we
do make small and sometimes big differences in the lives of those that we
serve.
