A mother has recently asked me for help with her 12 week old son. She has sought help from many sources, and the advice she had received was to put the baby on formula. The baby has continually been difficult to feed with him frequently pulling off, crying, trying to feed again, with this going on and on. An assessment of the baby feeding by another nurse, assured her everything looked fine, yet the problem persists. The only exception to these problems, is the two feeds in the middle of the night where the babe has no difficulty at all. The mother has tried posture feeding, changes in position, expressing to slow the flow...everything. She has part weaned the babe, giving formula to him at three feeds and feeding him two feeds of EBM, and he also has difficulty with the bottle, taking an hour and similar distress to complete the feed. A sibling has also had similar problems, and is now having speech difficulties. She really wants to feed but is at the end of her tether, any advice!
