Margery has provided us with an example of how Ross is using the AAP book to
bribe hospitals and health institutions to peddle their formula. There are a
number of actions that can be taken, many of which I detailed in a previous
issue of NABA's newsletter and in "Selling Out Mothers and Babies." First of
all, if your hospital/health institution takes care of Medicaid mothers and
you accept money, gifts, bribes, etc from a formula company, you may be in
violation of the federal anti-kickback statute. Your corporate compliance
officer and hospital attorney should check this carefully to avoid paying
heavy fines after this breech is reported to the government.

Next, make sure that all of the pediatricians realize that there have been
significant side effects reported regarding Lipil. Lipil and its fatty acid
blend of DHA/ARA has never received FDA approval. Four side effects have
surfaced: explosive diarrhea, vomiting, diaper rash, and putrifactive flatus.
The Institute of Medicine is studying this fatty acid blend for safety and
the formula is under post market surveillance. This means the pediatricians
have the obligation of reporting side effects to both the FDA and the formula
manufacturer. Typically the formula salesmen present information about the
formula which neglects to inform about side effects and is carefully
controlled. Most of the babies who exhibited side effects to the formula in
these studies were eliminated from the sample, thus not reported on!!!!

We have no idea if this formula has other side effects such as fat and other
nutrient loss through the stool, increased risk for obesity, and disturbed
antioxidant functioning leading to increased disease.

No one neads this AAP book. There are plenty of others out there that are as
good or better. Why does your institution need to give out things to mothers
that have the potential to harm their babies? If your lactation position is
not funded I have a number of ideas on how to increase funding and hours.
Since when do formula salesmen and companies dictate health care? Give me a
call and I will give you more ideas. You are too valuable and too important
to let the formula machine take over.
